New lighting narratives in architecture and design through digital illumination, including dynamic façades, marquee, and ceilings

Digital Lighting as a new architectural design tool

Digital lighting has moved beyond its traditional role as a functional or decorative element to become an expressive and dynamic architectural material. In today’s quest for unique experiences, point-by-point programmable lighting systems, backlit textile surfaces, and dynamic or interactive visual content open up new possibilities for reinterpreting ceilings, canopies, and façades as active, sensitive, and enveloping architectural skins. These technologies make it possible to design environments that communicate, respond in real time, and reinforce spatial identity—enhancing both sensory and experiential value. Whether in retail spaces, offices, restaurants, hotels, large-scale events, or public areas, digital lighting is solidifying its role as an architectural language that brings together technology, sustainability, and visual storytelling.

Digital lighting: A strategic investment for architecture and interior design

L’illa Diagonal Shopping Center (Barcelona): A marquee as a scenic threshold

At this iconic shopping center, the entrance has been transformed with a 210sqm stretched fabric canopy featuring RGBW LED technology. The ceiling becomes a dynamic canvas, responsive to programmed visual content tailored to campaigns, times of day, or events. The system enables pixel-by-pixel control, allowing real-time adjustments to color, intensity, and rhythm. The solution offers a balance of energy efficiency, visual comfort, custom design, and glare-free performance.

LOOM Events Azca (Madrid): An immersive digital ceiling for any event

This corporate space, located in Madrid’s financial district, features a 200 m² immersive digital ceiling, backlit by over 30,000 RGBW pixels. This technology allows the creation of scenic, adaptable atmospheres in real time—ideal for meetings, presentations, concerts, and corporate events. Here, lighting becomes an expressive tool that supports and elevates the context. The diffused and immersive design enhances visual comfort for both attendees and cameras, seamlessly integrating visual content with emotional storytelling and functional design. The result is a living digital canvas, capable of creating unique atmospheres through specially developed content for each occasion.

Golden Hotels & Experiences: Pioneering architectural lighting with a digital marquee

Golden Hotels & Experiences, with a strong presence on the Costa Dorada, has taken a bold step in architectural innovation by installing a next-generation luminous marquee at its Salou property. Known for its modular design, sustainability, and energy efficiency, this 80 sqm structure is integrated into the main entrance ceiling and functions as a dynamic digital canvas. The digital marquee not only stands out for its technological innovation but also plays a key role in the hotel’s architectural identity. The design respects the existing architecture and uses custom-made components. From the moment guests arrive, the user experience is enriched through a visual narrative that aligns with the hotel’s brand and character.

- Sant Joan de Déu Hospital (Barcelona): An interactive façade transforming public space

In the heart of Barcelona, the façade of Sant Joan de Déu Hospital has become a beacon of lighting innovation. With over 320 RGBW luminaires integrated into a programmable multimedia matrix, the state-of-the-art digital installation delivers dynamic visual content that responds in real time to various stimuli and contexts.

This intervention turns the façade into a living, sensory skin that redefines the relationship between architecture and public space. Designed to be accessible and emotionally engaging, the lighting installation creates a visual experience that goes far beyond mere function—crafting a playful and abstract narrative that resonates with patients, visitors, and passersby alike.

Six Key factors That establish digital lighting as an architectural language

-Communicative surfaces: Ceilings, façades, and canopies as dynamic visual platforms.

-Evolving content: Light as a contextual, ever-changing narrative.

-Authentic architectural integration: Respecting the project’s design language and geometry.

-Scenic visual comfort: Glare-free, diffused, emotionally engaging lighting.

-Programmable sustainability: Energy-efficient systems with adaptable control.

-Interactive content: Lighting experiences ranging from abstract to figurative—with user participation.
