The facade of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona has been transformed into an experiential lighting surface, adding new dimensions of expression to its architecture. Its elevated, prime location facing the city of Barcelona provides a distinctive and characteristic feature to the city’s sunsets and nights. The design and original concept of the digital multimedia facade, as well as the production of the audiovisual piece, were directed and developed by the lighting design studio Artec Studio. The manufacturing, supply, and installation were handled by Lumalia Studio. The ProtoPixel platform has orchestrated and controlled the facade's lighting with an intuitive and open control solution. Together, they created an advanced control and lighting system for this innovative installation. This upgrade has achieved a 30% reduction in energy consumption, enhanced the building’s appearance, and optimized thermal management throughout the year. These changes not only improve the visitor experience but also increase the hospital's visibility from the southern entrance of Barcelona, both day and night.

Experiential Lighting: Interactivity and Content from Figurative to Abstract

The content projected on the facade ranges from figurative to abstract, featuring playful elements designed for children, such as images, geometric shapes, and interactive games, all brought to life in a symphony of light and color. This innovative approach not only enhances the building's aesthetic but also serves an essential therapeutic function. Abstract projections encourage reflection and tranquility, while playful elements provide distraction and joy, especially for the youngest visitors. This setup allows for the communication of specific messages, highlighting significant days of the year with color-themed content appropriate for each occasion.

Impact on Urban Design: The dynamic facade of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona integrates 320 digital light fixtures

The illuminated facade of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona redefines hospital architecture in the city, dazzling with its innovative experiential lighting.

The installation features a total of 320 digital RGBW light fixtures from the Italian manufacturer iGuzzini, each ranging between 3 and 4 meters, seamlessly integrated into the facade's structure. This creates an interactive multimedia matrix capable of producing a stunning variety of visual effects. With over 12,000 pixels managed independently through the ProtoPixel control platform, this striking interactive architectural facade sets new standards in sustainability and urban design. It positions Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona as a pioneer in advancing towards a more technological and sustainable future.
